The American women swimmers are almost, but not not quite, perfect in the 4x200m freestyle. The event was added to the Games in 1996, and Team USA won the gold that year. And in 2000. And in 2004.
But in 2008 in Beijing, the America team of Allison Schmitt,Natalie Coughlin,Caroline Burckle, Katie Hoff finished third, behind gold-medalist Australia and silver-medalist China.
This year, Schmidt and 17-year-old Missy Franklin will lead the effort to win that gold medal back. (NBC primetime, 7-11 p.m., Ch. 5)
Also in the pool, Australian James Magnussen is the favorite in the 100m freestyle; Japan's Kosuke Kitajima is aiming to complete his third-straight sweep of the 100m and 200m breastroke; Americans Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte compete in the 200m IM; and Lochte is also slated for the 200m backstroke.
