Utah fans take note: CBS will air some Pac-12 basketball games
University of Utah fans will have one more channel to keep an eye on for the next few seasons. CBS is licensing a bunch of Pac-12 men's basketball games from ESPN.
That means that Pac-12 sports will appear on Fox, FX, Fox Sports Net, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ABC and CBS (Channel 2 in Utah). Oh, and don't forget about the forthcoming Pac-12 Networks - the national channel and the six regional channels, including the one that will cover Utah and Colorado.
The CBScoverage is part of a deal that network made to buy rights to ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 games from ESPN.
The deal call for four appearances by Pac-12 teams each season and keep in mind that a league game between, say, USC and UCLA, would count as two appearance. The deal also calls for appearances by "top tier teams," so - ahem - it may be a while before the rebuilding Ute basketball program is something the network will want to air.
Here's is CBS's release:
CBS Sports, college basketball's leading network broadcaster, has acquired the rights to broadcast men's college basketball games from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big 12 and Pac-12 Conferences through an agreement with ESPN. The multi-year agreement begins with the 2012-13 college basketball season.
The deal provides for 26 appearances per year, except for the first year which calls for 20 appearances, from top tier teams across the various Conferences, including six ACC appearances during the first-year of the deal and then 12 ACC appearances through the remainder of the agreement. In addition, CBS Sports will broadcast the Missouri Valley Conference Championship game for the length of the agreement and the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship game in 2013.
