I really like New Girl (8 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13), but what's happening with the cast is sort of stupid.

In last week's pilot episode, Damon Wayans Jr. starred as Coach, one of the Jess' (Zooey Deschanel) new roommates. When that pilot was produced, the future of Wayans' ABC sitcom, "Happy Endings," was in doubt. So he was hedging his bets.

Then ABC picked up "Happy Endings," making Wayans unavailable to "New Girl."

This sort of thing happens all the time during pilot season. What usually happens next is that Wayans' scenes in "New Girl" would be reshot with a different actor, who would continue on with the series.

But not this time. So, we're going to get a different actor (Lamorne Morris) playing a different character (Winston) in Episode 2.

That may have saved money on reshoots, but it seems unnecessarily dumb.
