"Breathe In" was directed by Drake Doremus, who also wrote the film with Ben York Jones. The cast includes Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Amy Ryan and Mackenzie Davis.
On the red carpet, Doremus, the 2011 Sundance Grand Jury winning-filmmaker, was full of energy. "Sundance is the best film festival," Doremus said, who went on to say that his favorite part about Sundance are the audience Q&As.
For "Breathe In," Doremus asked his actors to engage in 12-minute improv takes throughout the filming process.
"It’s just really exciting to watch people when they don’t know what they are going to say but they’re just thinking about what they’re feeling. That’s so fascinating and so many raw interesting things come about the course of working that way," Doremus said.
Australian actor Guy Pearce, who had to channel some serious raw emotions for his character, admitted that it’s hard to explain what the improv experience was like, but appreciated the results it achieved.
"You tap in to them because you are there in the moment imaging them," Pearce said. "When you’re play-acting as such, it comes to the surface very clearly."
Felicity Jones, who also starred in 2011’s "Like Crazy," talked about her trouble-causing character. "I think she can’t help herself but she brings a level of chaos without meaning to. She is a complicated woman."
The recurring theme in conversation with the actors was the chaos Felicity Jones’ character brings to the lives of those around her. Jones said that she could identify, but only with her character’s independence. "You always find things in yourself that you bring out, certain qualities that you then just magnify. I don’t think I’m quite as destructive as she is. Or I hope not anyway."
