In the documentary "We Were Here," director David Weissman crystalizes a time, a place, a community and a crisis.

It's the early 1980s in San Francisco, as the city's gay community first learned of a deadly disease — which came to be known as AIDS.

The documentary features interviews with five people who were there — seeing their friends and loved ones die, wondering if they would be next, and watching a caring community rise up to face the disease.

"We Were Here" screens in the U.S. Documentary competition of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.
