RSL’s Jordan Allen picks up knock with U.S., Gil stays home

Real Salt Lake continues to work toward being a full-strength squad for the first time in 2014, but it’s taking time.

Mainly due to the amount of untimely injuries which keep popping up.

Eighteen-year-old Jordan Allen suffered a hamstring injury while away with the U.S. U-20’s at the Dallas Cup tournament Sunday, per a team source. The extent of the injury hasn’t been specified yet as Allen traveled from Texas to Utah Monday and is expected to undergo further evaluation upon his return.

The RSL Academy product helped the U.S. beat Brazilian club Fluminese Friday when he earned the eventual game-winning penalty kick in a 3-2 win, but exited in the 35th minute of Sunday’s Dallas Cup final against Argentinian club River Plate. The U.S. lost in the final, 2-0.

Allen’s first year with RSL has been injury-plagued early on. He came on as a substitute in RSL’s second match of the year at San Jose and March 15 and suffered a sprained ankle that kept him out of match-day selection for a few weeks.

An injury to a player while away from the club on national team duty isn’t new to RSL in 2014. Allen’s hamstring injury is now the third injury an RSL player has picked up while away with a respective national team as goalkeeper Nick Rimando (knee) and defender Tony Beltran (ankle) missed a combined three club matches after suffering injuries during a U.S. friendly with Mexico on April 2 in Glendale, Ariz.

Which could have played a role in Luis Gil staying with the club this week. The 20-year-old midfielder was called into the U.S. U-21 national team camp for its inaugural pre-Olympic training camp in Carson, Calif. The pre-Olympic camp has been constructed to be a buffer between the U-20 youth national team and the senior team while forming a group of players that will make up the U-23 side trying to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil.

The club announced Monday that Gil, who continues to recover from a hamstring injury suffered at Sporting Kansas City on April 5, would remain with RSL rather than participating in the camp in Southern California. Gil missed RSL’s 2-2 draw at Philadelphia on April 12 due to injury, but was included in Saturday’s 18-man roster against Portland. Gil did not make an appearance in the 1-0 win.

Gil made his U.S. senior team debut on Feb. 1 in a friendly against South Korea at the StubHub Center and was called into the U.S. camp ahead of the friendly against Mexico.

In a busy RSL-related weekend, the club’s U-17 Academy team lost in the Generation adidas Cup final to English Premier League’s Stoke City in a shootout Sunday in Frisco, Texas. Stoke beat RSL 3-2 in the shootout five days after losing to RSL in a shootout during group play. Park City’s Sebastian "Bofo" Saucedo won both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot after scoring five goals in the tournament.
