Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Josh Saunders underwent surgery Tuesday to repair his torn left ACL, and will miss the rest of the MLS season.

Saunders, a 32-year-old veteran who helped lead Los Angeles to two straight MLS Cups, signed with Salt Lake this offseason and was the primary backup to Nick Rimando. Saunders tore his ACL on July 13 against FC Dallas, in what was only his third league game for Real. The team expects Saunders to miss six months.

Barring an early exit from Gold Cup play, Rimando won't rejoin RSL until after Saturday's matchup against the New York Red Bulls. That leaves backup Jeff Attinella as the obvious choice to make his second league start.

The transfer window remains open through Aug. 8, leaving time to add another goalkeeper. But RSL, which carried three goalies all of last year, seems more than content to finish the season with Rimando, Attinella and Lalo Fernandez.
