RSL's Lagerwey expects quick resolution on Saborio deal
Published on Nov 17, 2010 05:56PM
General manager Garth Lagerwey has been holding ongoing contract talks with the agent for forward Alvaro Saborio in Florida, and expects to have a resolution “one way or the other” by the end of the week.

Lagerwey said he also has been in contact with the agent for forward Robbie Findley, but declined to make any guesses about whether a new deal will get done to keep either player at RSL next season.

“I don't have a prediction right now,” he said.

Lagerwey is expected continue his meetings with agent Horacio Patanian before traveling to the MLS Cup in Toronto on Thursday night.

Saborio also is expected to travel there — he already has recovered well enough from his knee surgery that he can get around on crutches, Lagerwey said — along with RSL teammates Jamison Olave and Javier Morales, to accept their league awards. Saborio was named the MLS newcomer of the year, while Olave was named defender of the year and joined Morales and Nat Borchers on the MLS Best XI team.

Borchers might not make it to Toronto in time, after playing the final 25 minutes or so of the U.S. national team's 1-0 exhibition victory over South Africa in Cape Town today. Findley played in that game, too, but came off at halftime after starting and having a hard time among the imposing trees on the Bafana Bafana back line.

Findley has turned down earlier contract offers from RSL and MLS to consider opportunities in Europe, but it's not clear what teams might be considering him. Findley repeated declined during the season to talk in detail about his preferences, except to say after RSL was eliminated from the playoffs that he wanted to take his time deciding his future.

“I'm not going to rush into anything,” he said. “Just want to make sure I make the right decision.”

Team officials are believed to view Saborio as their top priority for the offseason, with an interest in re-signing Findley — though perhaps not at the salary he wants. His up-and-down form after returning from the World Cup probably has hurt his stock, especially considering RSL might have to devote a fair bit money to buying out Saborio's contract with FC Sion in Switzerland.

That contract calls for a $1 million buyout — Saborio has been on loan to RSL, and the loan expires Dec. 1 — but Lagerwey is hoping to negotiate that down. As for Findley, he said there is “nothing new” in the negotiations. “The conversations are still good and cordial, and no decision has been made.”
