Once the offers came in, Sione Houma didn't waste too much time picking where he wanted to play college football.
The Highland running back has made his mark by getting where he's going quickly, rushing for more than 1,000 yards last year for the 4A champion Rams. Houma's first offers came in May from Michigan and Washington, with Utah and Utah State following. Now, it appears that Houma will be playing at Michigan.
The Detroit Free-Press and Deseret News both say Houma has agreed to join the Big Ten's Wolverines, where he is expected to be utilized as a fullback.
There was a big role for fullbacks in offensive coordinator Al Borges’ playbook last season at San Diego State. Brandon Sullivan manned that position for the Aztecs in 2010 and had the third-most carries and the fourth-most receptions on the team while also paving the way for freshman All-American running back Ronnie Hillman to rush for over 1,500 yards.
Although he's the featured back in high school, Houma said he is open to playing fullback in college and is attracted to the opportunity to play early at U-M. Highland head coach Brody Benson said Houma can provide the Wolverines with an all-purpose player at fullback.
"He's got decent speed and he's a good-sized kid, so having those two qualities he could be a good running back and not just a blocking fullback,” Benson said.
Houma has committed to a Michigan program that is very much in transition. The Wolverines are under the leadership of first-year head coach Brady Hoke, formerly the man at San Diego State.
