Some basketball and softball recruiting news from the past week or two ..... * Southern Utah basketball coach Roger Reid announced on April 25 that he has signed Julian Scott, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward from Marysville, Calif. Scott, 235 pounds, was an all-Bay Valley Conference performer at Yuba College last season, averaging 12.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. His team went 25-6 and won the conference championship. He shot 58;6 percent from the field and averaged more than an assist a game. Scott prepped at Inderkum High in Sacramento. * Payson High softball star Jessica Uresti, a shortstop, has signed to play for Utah Valley University. * Southern Utah's women's basketball team has signed Lone Peak High's Marquelle Funk. A 6-foot guard, Funk was a first-team all-state pick by The Salt Lake Tribune last season. She averaged 16.5 points, four assists and three steals per game her senior year. She also made 35 three-pointers. Funk was also a member of Lone Peak's 5A state championship volleyball team. * Carbon High's Tia Pappas has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Westminster College's women's team. Pappas averaged 20.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for the Dinos last season. She was The Tribune's 3A MVP. Pappas averaged 5.1 steals and 3.1 assists per game and scored 1,022 points in her career at Carbon. ——————————- Here's a report from the Utah Pump-N-Run club basketball program on the success of the club's teams at the recent Double-Pump Spring Tournament in Denver: The Denver Double Pump Spring Tournament held April 15 – 17, 2011, proved to be a strong start to the season for Utah Pump-N-Run's 16U and 17U teams. Up against some stiff competition, the 17U team was able to win five straight games, tying for 5th place out of 64 teams with a record of 5 and 1, while the 16U team made it to the final 12 with a record of 3 and 1.In the final 6, 17U lost a heartbreaker to Double Pump Elite. Utah held the lead 52-51 with one minute remaining until 4-star recruit Nigel Williams-Goss from Double Pump Elite hit a 3-pointer to take their first lead of the game. From there, they never looked back. The game was a defensive battle as Double Pump Elite used physical play to change the tempo of the game. Near the game's end, crowds from all over the Gold Crowne Field House had gathered around the court to watch the finish.In addition to great team success, there were many individual achievements. Jordan Loveridge (West Jordan) from Utah Pump-N-Run's 17U team scored more than 30 points in three of the team's five games, and had 35 points and 19 rebounds in one game. Marcel Davis (American Fork) logged double digit assists in two games and used his change-of-pace point guard style to dominate the tempo of the games. Jordan Pryor (West Jordan) was on fire, hitting seven three pointers in one game. Jaden Jackson (Skyline) hit numerous three pointers throughout the competition, and didn't miss a single free throw throughout the tournament.Other players on 17U include wing Isaiah Tademy (Granger), guard Ryan Christofferson (Lehi) and 6'10 unsigned senior Ryan Van Pelt (Timpanogos).Quincy Bair (American Fork) didn't compete in Denver due to sickness. Casey Oliverson (Sky View) and David Collette (Murray) also were not in Denver but are on the 17U roster.Jordan Loveridge named ESPN U Recruiting "Surprise Player"Jordan Loveridge and Marcel Davis were named Hoopniks College Basketball Recruiting Top Performers.Utah Pump-N-Run teams look forward to feeding off their early success as they prepare for the Las Vegas Classic April 29-May 1.
