Bingham lost a heartbreaking 23-20 overtime contest to Bishop Gorman — USA Today's top ranked football team in the nation in Las Vegas Friday night when the Miners lost a fumble while trying to get the winning touchdown.

After spotting the Gaels a 13-0 lead early, the defending Class 5A champion Miners fought back to take the lead and used a 47-yard field goal late in the game by Chayden Johnston to put the game into overtime.

Cameron Smith was the big star for Bingham as he ran for one 45-yard touchdown and caught a 5-yard pass from Kyle Gearig for another touchdown. Johnston also added a 32-yard field goal in the tight contest where the Miners proved they belong with the nation's elite teams.

Miner coach Dave Peck said Bingham had a chance for the upset when its defense held Bishop Gorman to an overtime field goal. On a second and 12 situation, Gearig went back to pass and was hit as he attempted to throw it.

"We thought his arm went forward and the ball went quite a ways forward," said Peck. "It was one of those calls. We have no excuses. It was one of those things that happened and that was the end of the game."

Peck expressed pride in the way Bingham's players and fans represented Utah.

"We played with a lot of class," he said. "That's a tough place to play. I am proud of our kids and everybody involved.
