The current football alignment often jumbles traditional rivalries by putting cross-town rivals or schools located in close proximity into different regions or classifications.

Fortunately, that's why there is a preseason. And this week's games feature contests against school's that should be natural rivals.

For example, Bountiful city rivals 5A Viewmont and 4A Bountiful square off on the Vikings field in the 50th meeting between the two while Cedar City's two high schools, 3AA Cedar City and 3A Canyon View, battle at Cedar City.

Then there are a number of good county rivalries. Millard travels to Delta to renew a 91-year-old rivalry. Beaver and Kanab are playing each other for the 86th time. Roy and Weber play for the 50th time in the "Battle for the Shield."

Richfield is at South Sevier, South Summit travels to Morgan and Tooele is at Grantsville in rivalry games being played for the 55th time.

Murray, which took an impressive opening week win over Lehi, hosts a Taylorsville school located just a few miles west on 5400 South. Granger is at Kearns in a battle of 5A-4A neighbors.
