Utah's 12-team state American Legion baseball tournament opens Saturday morning with games scheduled in Smithfield and Logan.

Helper returns to defend its state title in the 12-team field.

The double-elimination tournament is scheduled to end Thursday at 5 p.m. on the Logan High baseball field.

"We've had a good summer, but not as good as last year," said Helper coach Jeff Cisneros. "St. George is a good team this year. They combined three high schools."

The tournament opens Saturday with Helper meeting Bear River at Smithfield at 10 a.m. and St. George battling Northridge in Smithfield at 4 p.m. In Logan games, Herriman will meet Cache-county based Trapper Blue at 11 a.m., while Syracuse tests Logan at p.m.

The Helper-Bear River winner will meet Box Elder at 1 p.m. in Smithfield. The St. George-Northridge winner will test Cyprus at 7 p.m. in Smithfield. The Herriman-Blue Trappers winner will meet the Trappers Orange team at 2 p.m. at Logan. And Layton will play the winner of Syracuse vs. Logan at 8 p.m. on the Logan High field.
