Former Hurricane football and wrestling star Brian Scott has died after a lengthy battle with leukemia.
Kerry Prince, who coached Scott in wrestling for several years, told The Tribune on Tuesday that he heard news of Scott’s death from Scott’s brother, Kenny Scott. Hurricane wrestling coach Mike Randall said an announcement was made during class alerting students and faculty to Brian Scott’s passing.
Scott, 20, was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 18, just weeks before he was set to leave on an LDS Church mission.
As a fullback, Scott led the Tigers to the 2011 Class 3A football state title, the school’s first after three straight second-place finished. He rushed for more than 100 yards and three touchdowns in the title game.
Scott was set to attend Southern Utah University on a football scholarship before being diagnosed with leukemia, but he also was a standout wrestler and won three state titles on the mat.
"This kid, if I was to say, was the most valuable athlete who ever came out of our school," Prince said. "The state football championship game we won because of him. They couldn’t stop him."
More than his athletic achievements, Prince said Scott will be missed most off the field, where he touched nearly everyone who came in contact with him.
"He was well-mannered, a pleasant kid to be around with a heart of gold," he said. "It’s just hard to understand. You don’t understand why someone with such talent and abilities, who had his whole life ahead of him, had to go through leukemia. It’s a huge loss. It’s just hard to imagine."
Added Randall, in an e-mail to The Tribune: "Brian lived an exemplary life in every way shape and form. I hope people will remember him as more than the greatest athlete that ever came through Hurricane High School."
