When East football coach Brandon Matich picked up the phone call from Tennessee Su'e Su'e on Sunday night, Matich instantly heard elation in the bulky offensive lineman's voice.
Suesue was calling to tell Matich he'd committed to play football at Boise State. The excitement dripped through the phone.
"It's a dream come true for him," Matich said. "I didn't know he and his family were such big Boise State state fans. He was so excited. Getting those phone calls never gets old. ... It's the most important thing to a lot of these families, and me and my staff have made a commitment to [getting players to college]."
Su'e Su'e, a 6-foot-2, 295-pound senior, paved the way for East's dynamic rushing attack that led the Leopards to the Class 4A title game and made stars of running backs Ula Toluta'u and Preston Curtis. He played guard and tackle during his time with the Leopards, but Matich said Su'e Su'e will move to center for the Broncos.
"He's an exceptionally gifted athlete," Matich said. "For a big guy, he moves very well and comes off exceptionally fast and aggressive. More importantly, he's extremely smart, and that stems from his parents, who have stressed education and school to their kids."
