Lone Peak has found its next football coach.
Mike Mower, an assistant with the program for the last three seasons, will be the Knights’ next leader, the Lone Peak High School sports Twitter account (@LPHSsports) announced Thursday morning.
Soon-to-be principal of Lone Peak Rhonda Bromley oversaw the hiring process, along with a hiring committee that included community members, former high school football coaches as well as administrators.
"Right now Mike Mower is the person we need," she said, adding this will be Mower’s first varsity head coaching job in his 28 years of coaching high school football.
Bromley said the interview process began a few weeks ago and added the committee interviewed 12 people for the head coaching position at Lone Peak, but in the end, Mower was their man.
"I’m very confident he’ll be able to step in and continue the tradition of excellence of football at Lone Peak," Bromley said. "Mike stood out as the one who can take on this program and move it forward. He already has the respect of the players, parents and the community."
Mower will take over the Lone Peak program after coaching for three decades in Utah County, both at American Fork High School as well as Lone Peak. Bromley said Mower will be a full-time history teacher at the school along with head coaching duties.
"I’m excited to have somebody who has been involved and just step in and continue the great things that are going on," Bromley said.
Mower also takes the reins from former Knights coach Tony McGeary, who resigned in late February amid allegations of kickbacks and an inappropriate sponsorship deal with Under Armour. McGeary led the Knights to a 51-12 record in his five years there, including the school’s lone state title in football in 2011.
