Wisconsin in the running for undecided Lotulelei

Weighing in at about 300 pounds and still uncommitted, Bingham defensive tackle Lowell Lotulelei probably is the biggest question mark left in Utah high school sports with national signing day just a few weeks away.

His older brother Star Lotulelei turned a career at Utah into a likely first-round status in this year’s NFL draft, but Bingham coach Dave Peck says the younger Lotulelei might not follow suit.

"I honestly couldn’t tell you," the coach said Thursday. "Usually I’ve got an idea. With Lowell, he’s basically said, ‘I want to take my trips and then decide.’ At one point, we all just assumed it was a given he was going to Utah. I honestly think right now it’s totally open."

In addition to Utah, Lotulelei is choosing among BYU, Utah State and Oregon State.

And one more school recently has found itself in the mix: Wisconsin.

After leaving Utah State for Madison, coach Gary Andersen promised he would recruit Polynesian players to the Big Ten. And Peck said he’s already heard from former Ute defensive line coach Chad Kauha’aha’a, who left Utah to join Andersen at Wisconsin, regarding Lotulelei.

"Chad said he’s going to make a run at him," Peck said.
