Bountiful QB Trevor Lloyd knocked out for the season with injury

The Bountiful Braves got their season off to a strong start with a 31-21 win over defending 5A champion Lone Peak, but the victory was not without at least one bad break.

The Braves have lost starting quarterback Trevor Lloyd for the season after the junior tore his ACL and MCL late in Friday's opener. The injury came on a late hit by the Lone Peak defense in the fourth quarter when Bountiful was leading 24-21, and drew a flag.

The player who drew the penalty was taken out of the game by the Lone Peak coaching staff.

Bountiful coach Larry Wall was disappointed to lose his starter, but stopped short of calling the hit a cheap shot.

"They pulled the kid after the play, and I think it was handled well on their end," Wall said. "I don't think there was any malicious intent. I don't think anybody over there was trying to take our quarterback out for the game."

Fellow junior Jordan Hayes, who had battled Lloyd for the spot in camp, took over and competed an 80-yard touchdown drive that eventually won the game for the Braves.

Still, Lloyd presented a tough casualty for Bountiful. In his debut as the starter, he had thrown for 205 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 17-for-25 passing. Hayes will have to step into his cleats full time.

All things considered, Wall said he was impressed at how Lloyd carried himself despite the injury.

"He handled it well, and he'll be alright in the long run," Wall said. "You hate to see that, because he worked very, very hard. We'll try to support Trevor as a team, and he'll help us mentor the young quarterbacks."

Lone Peak coach Tony McGeary was not immediately available for comment.
