Two-a-days: Olympus football preview

Last season, Olympus relied heavily on the arm of then-senior quarterback Scott Porter.

This season, expect the ball to remain primarily on the ground. Senior running back Anthony Schoenfeld knows his team's offense will have a different look, but he doesn't see that as a negative.

"As this offseason continues, we're starting to really look good," Schoenfeld said. "If we want it bad enough, we can get it done."

Despite graduating all but two starters on the offense, the team isn't void of varsity experience. Along with Schoenfeld, fullback Jake Jones and junior speed-man Coleman Meiers will try and find holes behind an almost completely new offensive line.

Head coach Aaron Whitehead expects a tough road back to the postseason after his team won its region and finished 9-2.

"We would love to repeat because we snuck up on some people last year," Whitehead said. "We won't be able to do that again this year."

A question still looms at the quarterback position as Whitehead sees potential in four candidates, but no clear front-runner in the preseason.

"Every single one of those young men are capable of doing the job," Whitehead said. "What's interesting this year is we don't have a standout kid who we can build around. As a team, we are slightly above average at every position."

LAST YEAR: 9-2, lost in second round to Bountiful.KEY RETURNER: Jake Jones, senior, fullback. Jones will be key in providing holes for running backs Anthony Schoenfeld and Coleman Meier in what head coach Aaron Whitehead said will be the main strength of the offense.PLAYER TO WATCH: Coleman Meier, junior, running back. Meier, after a season where he impressed in late-game situations, possesses game-changing speed. BIGGEST HOLE: The quarterback position is wide-open for someone to fill the big shoes of graduated all-state quarterback Scott Porter. NEED TO KNOW: After shocking their 4A region seven rivals, Olympus returns just three starters from last year's roster. Expect a fight to get back to the playoffs with region rivals Herriman andSkyline as the frontrunners. SEASON OPENER: Hosts Sky View. Aug. 17 @ 7 p.m.
