Cottonwood found itself a new football coach today, in the form of 63-year-old Greg Croshaw.
His high school experience is limited to a stint as defensive coordinator at Pine View High School, but it's tough to poke holes in the guy's résumé. In 24 years as the head coach at Dixie State, he amassed a record of 214-56-1 and won 17 conference titles. He was fired in 2006 after Dixie State made the move to Division II. He found his way back to the junior college ranks last year, when he was hired as the head coach at Mesa (Ariz.) Community College. But his list of career stops might have included an assistant coaching job at BYU, when he faced a situation simliar to the one he considered this weekend as he thought about leaving his program and recruits with two months until the start of the season.
In 1983, he said, LaVell Edwards offered him a job on his coaching staff and Croshaw intended to take it.
"I started thinking about the kids and the program and the kids you have an obligation to," he said. "So we turned around. It was very difficult. I was on the verge of the same outcome with this deal."
Croshaw said he struggled to make a different decision this time around.
"They come because you sold them on the program," he said of recruits.
However, he was swayed by his family ties to Utah, he said.
And he hopes this decision works out as well as his last one.
"You know what," he said, "I never regretted."
