Prep athletes of the week

Here are some of the top high school sports performers from last week:

• Baseball - Riley Gates, Snow Canyon: The junior was locked in an intense match-up with Region 9 foe Canyon View last week, but helped pull out a win with 11 strikeouts in six innings of work. He also hit his first home run of the season against Pine View, helping the Warriors surge to an victory. Gates is already considered one of the top pitchers in the state, but he could be increasing his stock as a college or pro prospect with more good performances.

With Stoddard leading the way, Bountiful is on track to take the Region 6 crown.

• Soccer - Keenan McCall, Park City: The forward picked a good time to break out of his slump. After going five games without a goal, the Miners' leading scorer found the back of the on a header in the 25th minute Friday to give Park City a 1-0 win over Class 3A No. 1 Wasatch. It was the Wasps' first loss in 30 games. Park City improved to 9-4 and is tied with Juan Diego for second place in Region 10.
