Layton Christian Academy drops 117 points on Mount Vernon
Published on Feb 6, 2012 06:19PM

Friday's boys' basketball games brought one of the more eye-bulging box scores you'll see this season.

Layton Christian Academy 117, Mount Vernon 38.

Don't cringe too much — this isn't a case of blatantly running up the score, coach Bobby Porter says. No one on the Eagles scored more than 15 points. It was just that all 13 players who recorded minutes scored four or more. Scifon Shyaka led with 15 points, followed by Jacob Maughn's 14.

It could've been a lot worse, in fact, Porter says.

"My starters only played 11-and-a-half minutes, and we didn't press all game or anything like that," he says. "Our bench guys are almost as good as our starters, and they're competing for minutes. We didn't try to run up the score, we just did a lot of things well, mainly rebounding and defense."

Layton Christian boasts a significant height advantage over most Class 1A teams in the state, with starters who are 6-foot-8, 6-foot-6, and 6-foot-5. The Eagles utilized that advantage to take a 38-13 lead by the end of the first quarter, then a 64-22 lead at halftime. Porter began to empty the bench.

The score, while certainly high, doesn't crack the UHSAA record book's top 10 point totals in a game (The record is held by Green River with 147). Actually, according to Porter, the 117 point total was not even his highest scoring game at Layton Christian. He recalled a game when he first started when his team had a 42-point first quarter on its way to 123 points.

He added that the postgame handshakes with Mount Vernon's staff went fine: "They were OK, and they knew it could've been worse."

At the moment, the Eagles are ranked No. 5 in 1A and leading Region 17 with a 4-0 region record. The team is only 6-8 for the season, but the record is a reflection of perhaps 1A's toughest schedule, with losses to the likes of Fremont, Copper Hills and Roy.

Porter sees his team rounding into form after struggling early.

"What is happening is the team is coming together," he said. "We scored a lot of points at West Ridge in the game before, too. We're playing good defense, and rebounding, and shooting well. I don't want to put the cart before the horse, because we gotta win region first, but we're looking good right now."
