Here's a few top performances from last week's high school sports action:
• Boys' basketball — Parker Van Dyke, East: There's no understating what Van Dyke and the Leopards accomplished last week, beating Highland in overtime on the road. East had not beaten Highland since 2003, and Van Dyke's 33 points and 14 rebounds were no small factor. The junior guard is asserting himself as one of the best ballers in the state, leading Class 4A in scoring this year. He's already drawing Pac-12 interest — this effort might pull in a few more scholarships.
• Girls' basketball — Makenzi Morrison, Alta: The BYU-signed senior has been lighting up the court of late, and had one of her best games of the season against top rival Brighton. She scored 30 points, shot three 3-pointers and grabbed seven rebounds in the 54-38 win. She also scored 17 in a win over Cottonwood. The Hawks had a shaky stretch in the middle of the year, but behind Morrison, they appear to be on the rise again.
• Wrestling — Ken Astle, Layton: The 138-pounder should contend for another state title this year, but first things first. Astle was a big reason why the Lancers were able to win the Region 1 Duals this year. He won all five of his matches, including three pins. Three of his matches were against other ranked wrestlers, as well, but Astle has solidified his standing at the top of his weight class in Utah.
