Standout matches in the wrestling All-Star Duals
Published on Jan 9, 2012 12:58PM

If you're coming out to Orem tonight for the 12th annual Utah All-Star Duals, check out our preview that ran in Sunday's paper. But here's a short digest of matchups that are sure to be the ones everyone is watching.

• 138 pounds, Grant LaMont (Maple Mountain) v. Ken Astle (Layton): This is one match everyone will be watching — partly by virtue that it's the first of the night and won't have any other contests going on alongside it. But it should be compelling. Astle was a surprise in last year's state tournament when he won it all, but this season he's become a rock on Layton's team. LaMont will be favored here, as wrestler who has multiple top-3 finishes at nationals. But Astle has excelled as the underdog before.

• 112 pounds, Britain Carter (Maple Mountain) v. Matt Findlay (Alta): These two have proven already that they're tops in the state at their weight. Carter has a pair of state titles to his credit, and Findlay won one as a freshman. With two of the top lightweights in the state going head to head, this pairing is what the All-Star Duals are all about. They've beaten a bunch of the same opponents, and both are outstanding. No one truly knows what's going to happen until they meet.

• 170 pounds, Brandon McBride (Olympus) v. Kyle Foy (Altamont): This is one of the great tests of how much classifications matter. In one corner, there's McBride, who won titles in Idaho and Illinois before winning a 4A championship last year — possibly the only high school wrestler to earn three state titles in three different states. Then there's Foy, who has won a pair of 1A titles and may one day be a rare four-time winner. Can a small-town stud like Foy beat a battle-tested, higher classification wrestler like McBride? Everyone will be eager to find out.

• 126 pounds, Mitch Brown (Payson) v. Rami Haddadin (Brighton): Undoubtedly, Brown is the favorite here. He's been simply unshakeable for the Lions, winning three state titles already in his career. An upset would be surprising, to say the least, particularly since Brown has beaten him already. But Haddadin doesn't lack for fire or passion, and his intensity was one of the reasons he was able to win the 5A state title last year. His loss to Brown was only a decision, so perhaps there's a window for a big surprise.

• 152 pounds, Zach Prince (Hurricane) v. Rasten Yeates (Box Elder): At middleweight, this is the best of the best. Prince rose to win last year's state championship and is a fierce contender out of the South. Yeates jumped a bunch of weight classes during the offseason, but he's beaten three of the competitors who are at the Duals this year, including Zac Loveless in last year's title bout. On paper, Yeates gets a slight edge coming from a more decorated program and have some impressive names on his wins list. But Prince has wrestled at 152 for a while, so it's possible he could have a body control advantage against Yeates, who still might be adjusting to his growth spurt.
