Chase Hansen was originally planning to go on an LDS Church mission in July 2012. But the Lone Peak star quarterback has decided to delay his mission until January 2013, giving him an additional six months in the Utah football program.
Hansen, who was named the Gatorade Utah Football Player of the Year this morning, will compete for the starting quarterback job, according to his father Brian Hansen. The Utah coaches want the incoming freshman to benefit from playing in the spring and the fall to "build a foundation" before going on his two-year mission.
When Chase Hansen returns in January 2015, he'll have enough time to prepare for the 2015 season.
Brian Hansen said even if his son does start for the Utes in 2012, he will still go on his mission the following year.
"He's still planning on going on his mission in January, whether he wins the job or doesn't win the job. His mission is really important to him," Brian Hansen said.
As starting quarterback, Hansen guided Lone Peak to an undefeated title run in Class 5A this year. The senior had 4,500 yards of total offense and was responsible for 55 touchdowns.
