From the bright orange mobile newsroom somewhere between D.C. and Baltimore⦠It was only a matter of a time before big-time offers started rolling in for Lone Peak junior guard Nick Emery.
Assuming the other coaches left Boston last week as enamored with the Knights' 6-foot-1 combo guard as Oklahoma State's, the Cowboys scholarship offer serves as a harbinger of things coming Emery's way and a barometer of the competition BYU and Utah will have for his services.
The Cowboys become the first school outside of Utah to offer The Tribune's 5A MVP winner of the same honor from the Deseret News as well as the Gatorade Player of the Year award after watching him play July 10-12 with Lone Peak at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame National Invitational in Boston.
Emery also has received considerable interest from Kansas, Arizona State and Washington. It's worth noting that Emery's older brother, Jackson Emery, was a BYU star through last season.
Emery, safely Utah's biggest 2013 recruit, averaged 21 points as a sophomore last season, and led the Knights to the 5A state title. In Boston, Emery upped that average to 23 points per game. Bill Oram
