Heartbreaking story behind a new 20/20 piece on the FLDS

ABC’s 20/20 posted clips from a new story today on the polygamous sect led by Warren Jeffs. See the promo here.

The piece focuses on Suzette Steed, a woman who left the sect in January. She was one of the people who was expelled around the end of the year but not asked to leave the Colorado City/Hildale border community, according to an affidavit she filed. Her husband had already been excommunicated in November 2011. As instructed, he left his family behind, driving away without a trace.

While Steed and five of her daughters were out, her eldest daughter had been allowed into the new United Order. They decided to leave after she attended a meeting of the new UO in which members were told they could no longer communicate with those on the outside.

Read the whole heartbreaking story in her affidavit here.

The 20/20 story is scheduled to air 9 p.m. Friday in Utah.
