Big decision today: The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled to keep the polygamous sect property trust once controlled by Warren Jeffs under state control, which should spell the beginning of the end of everybody’s favorite quagmire.
(My favorite, anyway. This case is fascinating.)
Of course, that ruling had to come down when I was sitting in Supreme Court arguments this morning. The one morning I’m not at my computer first thing! At least I wasn’t on vacation. My editor started looking at it while I was headed back, and even though he was a court reporter for decades he found it almost unreadable. Now that is how you know a case is complicated.
Anyway, one of the more interesting pieces of information to come out of my reporting on the case was this: Bruce Wisan has worked out a draft plan with Willie Jessop, et al to distribute trust property.
It would be done through a housing distribution board comprised of former FLDS members from the original advisory board and other people who still live in the community, like followers of former FLDS elder William Edson Jessop.
We’ll see what the FLDS people who still follow Jeffs think about the idea, and if they’ll end up participating in settlement talks.
Meanwhile, there are still some 20 (!) related cases, so I’ll still be writing about the UEP for a while.
