It looks like while I was gone, members of the Warren Jeffs-led FLDS church pulled down the enormous round concrete tower they've been constructing on and off for about a year.
J.D. Doyle, the pilot who takes aerial pictures of the YFZ Ranch and posts them at eldoradoflds.us, said sect members got back to work on it about a month ago, following a several-month halt. They toiled around the clock until it was approximately 100 feet high, with an observation deck on top, according to the Eldorado Success.
Doyle said he saw the tower, which was visible from up to two miles away, intact on the July 16. When he flew over on July 18, it had been destroyed.
"There's no telling how may man hours and money they dumped into that thing," he said. And no telling why it's now rubble.
- One other note: Leroy Johnson Steed gave up his appeal of his seven-year sentence for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, one of eight polygamous wives. Steed took a plea last year. He was also one of two people arrested for trying to take papers off the YFZ Ranch during the 2008 raid. Read the San Angelo Standard-Times story here.
