Pac-12: USC's firing makes Whittingham South's longest-tenured coach

I'll go ahead and declare myself as one person who did not see this coming: USC's in-season firing of coach Lane Kiffin.

The irony of the school's move early Sunday is that Kiffin's offense finally showed signs of life Saturday night, but the previously solid defense - the group that held Chuckie Keeton and Utah State to 14 points - crumbled in a 62-41 loss at Arizona State.

So since Utah joined the Pac-12 South in 2011, there have been coaching changes at USC, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado. Yes, that makes the Utes' Kyle Whittingham the dean of Pac-12 South coaches.

While questions remain about Colorado's future, anyone would have to say the new coaches have done well at those other schools. The immediate question is how the firing will affect USC the rest of this season, considering the Utes visit the Los Angeles Coliseum on Oct. 26.
