Pac-12: Stanford No. 2 in SI football rankings

Only three Pac-12 teams make Sports Illustrated's preseason Top 25, but the more surprising development is Stanford's No. 2 ranking. The Cardinal join Oregon (No. 5) and UCLA (No. 21) on the list.

Stanford linebacker Shayne Skov is featured on one of SI's six regional covers as part of a "Revenge of the Nerd" package about strong academic schools such as Stanford, Vanderbilt and Northwestern that have made a resurgence in football.

Stanford, which visits Utah on Oct. 12, is ranked behind No. 1 Alabama and ahead of No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 4 Ohio State. The list includes a disclaimer that if Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is declared ineligible, the Aggies will drop to No. 15.

The AP Top 25 preseason poll will be released Saturday.
