Pac-12: New coaches extend WAC's legacy

The 51-season history of Western Athletic Conference football will end Dec. 27 when San Jose State plays Bowling Green in the Military Bowl, but the WAC's legacy will extend to the Pac-12 in 2013.

That's because former SJSU coach Mike MacIntyre (Colorado) and ex-Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes (California) are moving to the Pac-12, having taken advantage of successful seasons in their outgoing WAC programs.

MacIntyre's hiring affects Utah more directly, because Colorado is a Pac-12 South rival of the Utes. Utah will not play Cal again until 2015 in the scheduling rotation.

MacIntyre produced a remarkable turnaround in San Jose, after his first Spartan team went 1-12 in 2010 – with its only victory coming against Southern Utah. This season, SJSU lost 49-27 to Utah State, but beat BYU 20-14 on the way to a 10-2 record.

At Colorado, which concluded a 1-11 season with a 42-35 loss to Utah, "We have a long way to go," MacIntyre said during his introductory news conference. "But I've been there before, and I know what to do."

Cache Valley native Kent Baer, a former Utah State player and coach, was MacIntyre's defensive coordinator at SJSU. Baer will be considered for the Spartans' vacancy, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Otherwise, he'll likely accompany MacIntyre to Colorado. Baer already has coached in the Pac-12 at Cal, Stanford and Washington.

Meanwhile, SJSU's hiring process will affect Utah State, with both schools moving into the Mountain West next season. The Spartans' athletic director is Gene Bleymaier, formerly of Boise State.</
