Ex-technician earns snowboardcross medal

Alex Deibold went from behind the scenes of the Olympics to the medals podium in four years.

Deibold, who's from Vermont and is listed among Westminster College's 23 students on the U.S. team, earned a bronze medal in Tuesday's men's snowboardcross event.

In 2010, he acted as a technician for the team, charged with waxing, scraping and grinding the snowboards for competition. He was a surprising medalist, after the more celebrated U.S. riders Nate Holland and Nick Baumgartner were eliminated in their opening heats.

Deibold barely edged another American, Trevor Jacob, to emerge from the semifinals.

Westminster, which has a partnership with the Park City-based U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, now claims three medals in the Olympics among its enrollees, plus a gold medal for former student Kaitlyn Farrington.
