Utah Crowd-Funding: The revolution will be staged

This week’s Utah Crowd-Funding project provides front-row tickets to a revolution.

The Hive Theatre Company, a Salt Lake City theatrical group, is gearing up for its fifth season in 2015 — which the group is billing as "the 2015 theater revolution."

The season kicks off Oct. 18 with a fund-raising "rally," before the real productions of 2015:

• "Bupkis: A Play About Nothing," a collaboration by five playwrights and five local actors, directed by Hive founders Jared and Tiffany Greathouse. (May 8-16, 2015.)

• "Cock," by British playwright Mike Bartlett, a stripped-down depiction of a love triangle involving a gay couple and the woman one of the men falls for. (June 19-27, 2015.)

• "The Secret Lives of Clowns," a new comedy-drama by Jared Greathouse about a successful theater critic whose past life is exposed when an old college friend is murdered. (Oct. 9-17, 2015.)

The Hive is taking to Kickstarter to raise money for the 2015 season — specifically, $2,500 to mount next year’s productions. So far, the campaign has raised $275, or 11 percent of the goal. The deadline is Sept. 7.

Benefits for donors range from an online thank-you (for $10) to a package that includes eight free tickets, a T-shirt and a trucker’s hat (for $200).

If you have a crowd-funding project you’d like mentioned on The Cricket blog, email it to: spmeans@sltrib.com. Be sure to put "crowd funding" in the subject line.
