Somewhere, recently, a Utah musician had a brilliant idea: Record a cover of "Let It Go," the Oscar-nominated show-stopper from Disney’s "Frozen," and shoot the video at the Ice Castle in Midway.
Now imagine that, after the video was shot, the musician discovered another musician from Utah had the same idea.
Yes, there are two covers of "Let It Go" on YouTube — each performed by a popular Utah musical act, and each filmed at the Ice Castle in Midway.
One is by Alex Boyé, the popular LDS singer who lives in Salt Lake City. It’s billed as an "Africanized tribal cover" (the British-born Boye is of Nigerian descent), and features the One Voice Children’s Choir and pre-teen soloist Lexi Walker. (Walker made a splash last May, when she wowed Real Salt Lake fans with a striking rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner.")
The other is by The Piano Guys, the St. George-based pop-classical instrumental group fronted by pianist Jon Schmidt and cellist Steven Sharp Nelson. Their version mashes up the Disney song with the "Winter" portion of Vivaldi’s "The Four Seasons" concerto.
The video of Boyé’s version was posted on YouTube last Friday, and became an immediate viral sensation — getting write-ups on Time’s website and The Huffington Post. As of this morning, it has logged more than 14 million hits.
The Piano Guys’ video (which features an iced-over grand piano and an ice sculpture of a cello) went up on YouTube early this morning, and in its first few hours has scored more than 70,000 hits.
(By the way, The Piano Guys and Boyé have collaborated before, on a cover of Coldplay’s "Paradise" in which Boyé sang some of the lyrics in Swahili.)
Either way, the two "Frozen" covers give viewers a last chance to see the cool ice designs at the pop-up Midway art project. The Ice Castle closed for the season Monday night.
