Two made-in-Utah movies among Razzies’ ‘Worst Picture’ nominations
Nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards — The Razzies — have been announced today, and Utah can be proud of the fact that two movies filmed here are vying for the Worst Picture award.
Gore Verbinski's big-budget Western "The Lone Ranger" and M. Night Shyamalan's sci-fi survival drama "After Earth" are major contenders for multiple dishonors — getting five and six nominations, respectively.
The top recipient, though, was Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2," which took eight nominations, including Worst Picture. The other Worst Picture contenders are Tyler Perry's "A Madea Christmas" and the sketch comedy "Movie 43."
Both "The Lone Ranger" and "After Earth" used southern Utah's red rocks as a backdrop.
"After Earth" was also nominated for Jaden Smith's lead performance, his father Will Smith's supporting performance, Shyamalan's direction, the screenplay, and "Worst Screen Combo" for the two Smith's "on Planet Nepotism."
"The Lone Ranger" also scored nominations for Johnny Depp's lead performance as Tonto, Verbinski's direction, the screenplay, and the "Worst Sequel, Remake or Rip-Off" category.
By the way, getting a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival doesn't insulate someone from the Razzies' wrath. One of the "Worst Actor" nominees is Ashton Kutcher for "Jobs," which debuted at Sundance last year.
