With hours to go, Salt Lake Film Society’s Kickstarter drive closing in on goal
There are only a few hours left in the Salt Lake Film Society’s attempt to raise $50,000 in individual pledges via Kickstarter for its "Digital Deadline" campaign.
The Kickstarter deadline is midnight tonight, and the campaign has raised $34,555 — about 70 percent of its goal.
According to SLFS’s Twitter feed, an anonymous donor is offering up a $10,000 matching gift, meaning that donations made today will be doubled.
The campaign is aimed at buying new digital projectors for the one screen at the Tower Theatre (876 E. 900 South) and the six screens at the Broadway Centre Cinemas (111 E. 300 South).
The new projectors are a necessity in today’s movie-exhibition world, as many studios and distributors have either stopped striking film prints or plan to stop in the next year or so.
Most commercial theaters in the United States have made the conversion, in part because of studio subsidies. But those programs are out of reach for most independent, art-house and small-town theaters.
The Salt Lake Film Society’s Kickstarter campaign is part of a larger $700,000 fund-raising drive that will ultimately buy seven projectors (which go for about $100,000 a pop).
