Here’s what’s being talked about over the weekend in pop culture:

• The pre-Civil War drama "12 Years a Slave," already declared an Oscar favorite after its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, won that festival’s top prize, the People’s Choice award. [The Guardian]

• Nina Davuluri, Miss New York, is your new Miss America — and the fact that she’s the first Miss America of southern Asian descent has unleashed a torrent of racist garbage on Twitter. [CNN]

• Cecily Strong, one of the funniest new hires on "Saturday Night Live" last season, will pair with Seth Meyers on the show’s spotlight "Weekend Update" segment – and is likely to take over the anchor desk solo when Meyers leaves to host "Late Night" next year. [Vulture]
