Some familiar dinosaurs and some new demons arrive in movie theaters this weekend.
"Jurassic Park" returns, with a restored 3-D (and IMAX, where available) print that puts Steven Spielberg’s dinosaurs in your lap. It’s still as fun a movie as you remember it being, with super-cool effects, great pacing and a charming cast including Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough and Samuel L. Jackson.
The horror remake "Evil Dead" is a hellacious movie, overflowing with bloodshed and gory set-ups that remind you what a hardcore horror movie can do. It hits the high spots of the 1981 Sam Raimi original, while also playing with the icons just enough to make it surprising. It’s too gory for most audiences, but dedicated horror fans will love it.
Lastly, at the Broadway is the Romanian drama "Beyond the Hills," a wrenching drama about two orphanage roommates, Alina (Cristina Flutur) and Voichita (Cosmina Stratan), whose lives have taken different paths. Alina is now a mentally unstable barmaid in Germany, while Voichita has become a nun back home in rural Romania. When the two are reunited, and Alina bristles at the discipline of Voichita’s monastery, things take a troubling turn. The drama (which won awards at last year’s Cannes Film Festival for Christian Mungiu’s screenplay and Flutur’s and Stratan’s performances) is a slow-building but intense look at good intentions gone horribly wrong.
