Here's what's happening today in pop culture:

• That thud you heard wasn't a giant falling from a beanstalk, but the box-office fate of "Jack the Giant Slayer." It topped the weekend with $28 million, but that's a "John Carter"-sized disappointment for a movie that cost $195 million to make. [Box Office Mojo]

• Steven Spielberg says he is developing a screenplay by the late Stanley Kubrick about Napoleon for a TV miniseries. The last time Spielberg worked on a Kubrick project, the result was "A.I. Artificial Intelligence." [The Hollywood Reporter]

• So, apparently, there's this simmering national hatred for Anne Hathaway. Who knew? [New York]
