• The movie world is focusing on Canada, as the Toronto International Film Festival — the biggest in North America, and a springboard for many Oscar contenders — begins today. [CTV News]
• This year’s honorary Oscar recipients: Stuntman/director Hal Needham ("Smokey and the Bandit"), documentarian D.A. Pennebaker ("The War Room") and producer and American Film Institute founder George Stevens Jr. Also, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg will get the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
