For a brief portion of her long and storied acting career, Celeste Holm was a Salt Laker.
Holm, who died today at the age of 95, worked three seasons -- from 1996 to 1999 -- on the CBS TV series "Promised Land," a spin-off of "Touched By an Angel."
Holm played Hattie Greene, the tough but loving grandmother of the family that traveled the nation trying to help others.
And though she lived only part-time in Salt Lake City, she was welcomed by Salt Lake residents -- even serving as grand marshal of the St. Patrick's Day parade in 1998.
In 1998, The Cricket interviewed Holm, to talk both about the parade and her work in the 1950 classic "All About Eve" -- whose record of 14 Oscar nominations was tied that year by "Titanic."
"It took eight people for us to do it, and look how many it took for them," Holm said, in her trademark dry wit.
Holm said she knew "All About Eve" was special "the minute I saw that script. I just hoped that we could get on the screen what was on the script, and we did. I don't think we changed a comma in it. It was such a good script, nobody would think of touching it -- one of the few scripts I've ever done about which that was true."
"All About Eve" won six Oscars: Best Picture, supporting actor for George Sanders, director and screenplay for Joseph L. Mankiewicz, costume design and sound recording.
Holm was nominated for a supporting actress Oscar, losing to Josephine Hull for "Harvey."
She won that award three years earlier for her role in the anti-discrimination drama "Gentleman's Agreement." And that movie came out just four years after her star-making role as Ado Annie in the original Broadway production of "Oklahoma!"
