"The Sessions" was, without a doubt, one of the best-received movies at this year's Sundance Film Festival - scoring standing ovations for 65-year-old director Ben Lewin and for its star, John Hawkes.
Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer for the film, which was getting Oscar talk for Hawkes the minute after those ovations concluded.
The movie (which was titled "The Surrogate" at Sundance) is based on the real story of Mark O'Brien, the journalist and poet who lived much of his life in an iron lung, a victim of polio as a child. As played by Hawkes, O'Brien begins to explore whether he can lose his virginity -- and begins a series of sessions with a no-nonsense sexual surrogate (Helen Hunt).
The trailer explores that relationship, as well as highlighting two other characters: A priest (William H. Macy) in whom O'Brien confides, and a nurse (Moon Bloodgood) who wheels O'Brien to his sessions.
