The Cricket's Daily 3: Why the Web's gone dark

(AP Photo/Wikipedia) Last week, certain websites, most prominently Wikipedia, went dark to protest legislation in Congress that would crack down on pirated movies and TV shows. It was a one-day stunt. But it raises questions about our connectedness.

Here's what's happening today in pop culture:

• Wikipedia and other major websites are dark today, and others are showing symbolic protests, to point out what web folks consider draconian restrictions on the Internet in the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) now being discussed in Congress. [Huffington Post]

• Fans of celebrity cook Paula Deen are sympathetic after she announced she has type 2 diabetes. Critics -- like TV chef Anthony Bourdain -- are incensed that she's known for three years, continued to push her high-fat recipes, and only made her disease public when she had an endorsement deal with a medical-products company. [CBS, People]

• George Lucas gives a lengthy interview to The New York Times Magazine, saying that he's ready to chuck his Hollywood career -- because of studio rejection of his Tuskegee Airmen drama "Red Tails," and because of fanboys still complaining about how he messed up his "Star Wars" franchise.
