Two Broadway stars - one a four-time Tony winner, the other a scion of a legendary Utah theater family - are getting married.
Audra McDonald and Will Swenson got engaged on Jan. 1, reports the Broadway trade publication Playbill.
McDonald is a regular on the ABC series "Private Practice." She's now starring in a revival of "Porgy and Bess" on Broadway. She received Tony awards for her roles in "Carousel," "Master Class," "Ragtime" and "A Raisin in the Sun."
Swenson is now starring in the Broadway musical "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." He received a Tony nomination for his role as the sexually liberated Burger in the recent revival of "Hair."
In 2009, McDonald and Swenson visited Utah for a two-week fundraising run of "110 in the Shade" for Orem's Hale Center Theater, operated by Swenson's brother and sister-in-law. The pair first met during the 2007 Broadway production, in which McDonald starred as Lizzie and Swenson understudied the lead role of con-man Bill Starbuck.
Swenson grew up in Utah theater, as the grandson of Hale Center Theatre's matriarch Ruth Hale. He also starred in two early Mormon Cinema comedies: "The Singles Ward" and "The R.M."
