Supporters of anti-discrimination protections for gay and transgender Utahns will rally at the Capitol on the opening day of the 2011 Legislature.

A new Salt Lake Tribune poll shows that 65 percent of Utahns support a statewide anti-discrimination law, which would make it illegal to fire or evict someone for being gay. But the Utah Legislature has snubbed proposed legislation every year since 2008.

At 5:30 p.m. today (Jan. 24), organizer Eric Ethington, Pride in Utah founder, expects about 250 people to join him in a sit-in inside the rotunda. Participants plan to hold signs that represent the cities and towns they are from.

In an e-mail, Ethington said the rally is to remind legislators, "They must support all of their citizens, rather than just some."
