Orlando, Fla. • Victor Oladipo's Indiana Hoosiers beat Trey Burke's Michigan Wolverines twice last season. But as the two rookie guards face off tonight at Amway Center, they say theirs is a rivalry built on respect.
Burke was the No. 142 ranked recruit coming out of high school. Oladipo was ranked No. 144. But both players fought their way to spots in last year's draft lottery.
"He's a guy that's kind of like me, he wasn't really highly recruited and had to prove himself," Burke said of Orlando's Oladipo.
The Jazz point guard called Oladipo "an exciting player" and a "great defender."
The Magic guard dished out admiration, too.
"The way he got to where he's at, he definitely had to work hard to get there," Oladipo said of Burke. "He wasn't highly recruited coming out of high school either. So much respect for him. I've always respected his game."
Burke is averaging 12.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists a game for Utah. Oladipo is putting up 13.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists a night.
"He does a lot of things very well," Oladipo said. "He can get a bucket anytime he wants, really. He has a solid outside shot. He can get into the lane really well and he can create for others. We have to do a good job of containing him today."
