Orlando, ƒla. • Here's the thing about the NBA summer league in Orlando. The whole thing takes place in a tiny practice gym. At all times, the halls are filled with executives, players, agents, media. It's an absolute zoo. People inevitably talk to people with whom they could be negotiating deals but are just as likely asking for dinner recommendations.
[Orlando sidenote: Rusty Spoon, yes; Muchos Tequila and Tacos, decidedly no.]
All that said, Marc Stein's report on Twitter that the Jazz are entertaining the idea of signing 30-year-old point guard John Lucas is a logical one. Lucas walked into Amway Center with Jazz Director of Basketball Operations Richard Smith. Then, the two watched at least one game, Pacers/Sixers, together. In his tweet, Stein said, Lucas was spotted huddling with the Jazz. It's entirely possible Stein — or someone else — saw more interaction between the sides than I did, but it's worth giving a bit of credence to.
The Jazz are in dire need of a veteran point guard, and one who can stand up to the rigors on an NBA season. Lucas has boucned around the league — and foreign leagues — but would be a reasonable, non-threatening tutor for rookie Trey Burke. It certainly would not be a sexy hire, however. Lucas appeared in 63 games last season with the Toronto Raptors, playing 13.1 minutes per game (second highest of his career). The team did not pick up his option last month, making him an unrestricted free agent. He has career averages of 5.1 points and 1.5 assists.
He is the son of former NBA coach John Lucas.
