Excerpts from a media interview Wednesday with Jazz guard Raja Bell after shootaround at EnergySolutions Arena.
Bell on the injection and his knee: It was good. It feels really junky right now, but I'm assuming it went well. The doc thought it did pretty good.
Lubricant was injected into knee: Yeah, I don't know the exact name of the solution that was put in. But they dumped a vial full of stuff in there a couple of days ago.
One or multiple injections: I don't know. I'm a little — the doc said I could have one injection. But I got a call from the company this morning — they called my agent — and they said it's best in a series of injections. So we're trying to figure out how much he gave me and if it was enough to last so that I didn't have to have one a week for the next three to four weeks. … I didn't know that and that wasn't prescribed for me initially. But when the company calls and says that their product's best used like that, then …
Decision to receive injection: … When I was in Miami, I had multiple docs look at the MRI and they didn't think that microfracture was going to be the best way to treat the lesion that was in my knee. They said that a lot of guys have it and it's not symptomatic. And combining that with the big bone bruise that was in my MRI, they felt that was more of the problem that was having. The shot and some rest, and they felt confident that I'd be fine.
Wanting to avoid microfracture surgery: Yeah. Obviously you don't want to be out. Microfracture's eight weeks on crutches and basically you lose every muscle in your leg, and then you've got to go through building that back up. That's a pretty big task to have to do. So if you can avoid it, that was definitely going to be what I was looking to do. I was able to meet with some other people who had other ideas about my health and how I could get back to playing, and so I went with the course of less resistance, if you will.
Hasn't ruled himself out this season: I don't know. I guess we'll play it by year. I'd like to [return]. I've got two weeks of no running, jumping, shooting — nothing that puts any kind of banging pressure on that knee. So basically I can ride an elliptical and a bike. That's the hurdle that I'll have to tackle first. Then getting back in shape and being able to really go out there and produce is the next hurdle. So if I can do that, I'd love to play and help in any way I can. But I guess we'll have to attack it. First order of business is the two weeks. And then when we get there, we'll try to see if I can get to a point where I can play.
