Ex-BYU's Fredette discusses NBA draft workouts, Jazz plans
Former BYU guard Jimmer Fredette discusses his recent NBA draft workouts, upcoming schedule and mindset with less than three weeks remaining before selection day.Recent workouts with Indiana, New York: They both went well. They were both pretty similar. We did a little bit of shooting in the beginning, and then pretty much the rest of the time we played a little bit of three-on-three. We did a lot of ball screen stuff, because that's what they want to see now that's what the NBA is; it's a ball screen league. And they want to see how you defend it and how you can react certain ways, offensively and defensively. So, I felt like I did pretty well in both workouts. The feedback was positive. My challenge going in was to show 'em I can play on the defensive end of the floor, and that I'm athletic.Having the ability to actually prove that during workouts: It's difficult, but it's what you have. It's the time that you have. So you have to go out there and just at least show them that you want to compete, and you have enough athletic ability and are smart enough to defend the pick-and-roll and really just go out there and compete is the biggest thing. That's what they want to see, and that's what I did. And both cases, I think they saw that I can play defense at the next level. That was the feedback. They said I'm very athletic; a lot more than people give me credit for.Surprising people: Yeah, for sure, and that's the plan. Keep surprising people. That's what hopefully I can do that for the rest of my career.More important to be drafted by a team that fits rather than to be selected as high as possible: It's a lot more important. It's all about longevity of the career. If you're in the wrong situation, even if you go high, your career can be cut really short and that's not what you want. You want to be able to stay in it for a long time. I hope to be in the NBA for a long time and have a great career do some great things and be a great player. It's all about situation.Upcoming schedule: I have Sacramento coming up, and I think I have one with the Suns and the Jazz later on. It'll be somewhere in mid-June I'm not sure exactly it'll be sometime in mid-June.Working out with Kemba Walker, and proving he's among top guards in the draft: Yeah, definitely. It's something I'm looking forward to. Kemba's a very good player and I like him he's a good guy. He's fun to be around. But he's a competitor, and so am I. And you want to go out there and show that you can play with anybody. That's what I've been wanting to do my whole career and I'm looking forward to battling against him again.Brian T.
